Steam Developed Kit Applications are now open
One of the new most intriguing consoles of this generation, Steam Deck is a small powerful handheld developed by Valve that will allow you to play all your favorite games in your Steam library when traveling. Gabe Newell described the game as, basically, a mobile PC - it's not only able to run Steam, but also other software like Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store. Now, while we are getting closer and closer to the shipping date, Steam Deck development kits are made available to Steam developers, allowing them to get their hands on the console to see exactly how much their projects work on it.
In the announcement on the Steam event page, SteamWorks Development described the process to get your hands on one of the development kits: _I as a Steam Developer, you can access the Hardware Application Form to request a Kit DEVELOPMENT STEAM DECK. Fill out the form and make sure you read the contract and direction of the development kit. The supplies of development kits are limited, so we will examine the requests via the online form on a case-by-case basis and will ship it as soon as possible.
There are currently 3 different Steam Deck models, each with a different storage space - you can choose between a 64GB, 256GB and 512 GB model, or you can add memory using the help of A microSD card. Although each model is preloaded with Steamos, it is essentially only portable PCs and, as such, can be modified as you please. However, it is not perfect - there have been some concerns about the life of the console battery, which is only 2 to 8 hours depending on the intensity of the programs running.
The Steam Deck is available for the order now, with an expected shipment for December 2021 - Hope the players will have commercial steam decks between their hands by the beginning of 2022!
