Steam Deck is not designed as a gateway to PC games
Steam Valve Deck, the future portable game platform that comes as a displacement PC, apparently a different audience from the one who was supposed to depart.
As a powerful and pre-built PC system, it can be expected that its buyers do not have access to the pieces needed to play PC games. Obviously, hypotheses like these should always be questioned. In an interview, one of the designers of Steam Deck said:
We do not have a strong prediction than a lot of people will choose it as their first pc, but as many people choose to upgrade their existing PCs, we are quite confident that Steam Deck will be a choice they Manufacture
It's not an unreasonable direction, if you think about it. The Steam Deck allows you to take existing PC games (not just those downloaded from Steam - as mentioned here) and play them in a new environment. If you consider that Steam Deck is an extension for an existing PC configuration - rather than an independent console - things are starting to have much more meaning.
One of the most common concerns about Steam Deck was the apparent lack of storage space. And now, it's easy to understand why: the storage space is not a problem when you assume that the buyer already has a decent PC configuration. You can not store all your games on the Steam Deck because you are not supposed to it. You keep them elsewhere and when you want to take them to a trip, you move the files in the Steam Deck.
It may take some time to get used to it - comparisons with Nintendo Switch seem so intuitive - but this intuition can be misleading. The good mental framing can do or undo how nice a product is, and consider the Steam Deck as an extension of an existing PC configuration could better help future buyers to feel satisfied with their purchase.
